Riverview Improvement Association Meeting Minutes

May 12, 2010

Attendance:

Officers: Sandra Corrente 65 Lippitt, Gail Gaffney 76 Lippitt, Frank Ferri 38 Lippitt, Elaine Sears 65 River Vue, Helen Fontes 76 Lippitt

Neighbors:  see sign in sheet

Quest Speakers:  Patrick Maloney (Warwick School Committee),  Warwick Police: Officer Caron, Officer McGee

Warwick School Committee quest speaker comments:

Pat Maloney dicussed two major issues this year.

  • The H1N1 scare was handled very swiftly and efficiently.
  • The four schools closings, saved approximately 3.2 million and they are already looking to cut 6-8 million next year. The schools closed due to a decline in enrollment. Enrollment went from twenty thousand to twelve thousand. One thing the School Committee is doing now is looking at a funding formula so that certain communities geta better balance of economic funding.
  • If a new school has to opened one year and then closed four years later, that's what will be done.
  • School Administration will be moved to the former John Green Elementary School.
  • The budget for this year was just submitted. 1st let me say, go to the meetings. You don't realize how much impact you can have by attending. For example: A Warwick resident attended the last meeting. She presented her reason why a certain activity shouldn't be cut from the budget, and they listened. A decision was made, and they decided in her favor. Your voices need to be heard. The budget will be presented to the city council. The meeting typically lasts about two hours.
  • Anyone can review the budget. Go the Warwick School.org. Look for the school documents tab. It will even list last years as well as the year before.
  • Salary and benefits are included in the education costs of each child.

Warwick has become known for their special needs programs:

  • Residence have moved here to get more help for their child. Our special needs environment is far more superior than neighboring cities. (And there are additional expenses associated with this specialized education).

Election Year: In November

  • This is the year if you want your voice heard. This is the time to talk.

Police Log below was read by Officier Caron:

  • 2 break-ins on Whipple. The first two safety deposit boxes were taken and the second the garage was broken into but we are not sure if anything is missing
  • Does anyone have any more problems at 47 Whipple. We are ready to cite but haven't had any complaints lately so we need your input or your call if there should be any problems.
  • The funds have been rediced for the Party Patrol. So instead, we have potential HOT SPOTS and we deal with each accordingly.
  • We don't see the twenty officers being reinstated but we do see a few coming back
  • We have rescheduled the "Aging and Driving" program. We will leave a copy with us for anyone interested

Thanks, Officers Caron and Tetreault

OLD NEWS:

  • The association collected $350.00 dollars during the Adult Social - Wine and Cheese Party and everyone enjoyed themselves. A thank you goes out to David & Linda for making the event possible.
  • The animal shelter is still renovating from the flood. They are still in need of donations if anyone is interested.

From a concerned neighbor.
Question:  If a pet was being documented for certain a behavior and that was stored on paper, was the information lost?

Answer:  Yes, the paper documents were lost, however anything entered into the computer was not. The file information had been stored on a secondary server (backup).

  • Anything pertaining to the sewers is on hold due to the flooding. A meeting was held before the flood. Frank will try to get output from meeting, if possible.
  • May 28th is the deadline for anyone applying for Fema assistance.
  • Bill will get in touch with Kevin about the work at the end of Lippitt. Workmen have been seen down at the end of the street, but slow going since the flood.
  • Sandra confirmed the Halloween parade for the October 31st. She will give a call at the end of August.
  • We need help passing out Flyers. We use to have a group of people that passed them out and we can no longer find a list or get volunteers.
  • Independence Day Parade will be held on June 27th (Sunday) 12 Noon
  • July 10th (Saturday) Beach cleanup. Frank will call Save the Bay to see if they will help.

Police Log below was read by Frank Ferri;

Here's what's been going on:

220 Tidewater Drive, house broken into. 110 River Vue, house broken into two different dates with laptop, money and jewelry taken, suspect was identified. 77 Hope Avenue, cell phone taken from a vehicle.

The resident of 47 Whipple was spoken to regarding the complaints. He seemed cooperative, however since we spoke to him, we have gotten more complaints. We are working on trying to impose the party house ordinance on the house. We spoke with Lt. Hannon and we are trying to figure out if we have enough to go in front of the board right now. If there are anymore complaints or problems, please tell everyone to call (Warwick Police). The more calls we have the better off we are when we present our case. Please let us know if any concerns or problems from the group.

Thanks, Officers Caron and Tetreault
