Beach Clean Up
Friday, 18 July 2008
Save The Bay(R), Narragansett Bay

The Riverview Improvement Association, in conjunction with Save The Bay, is holding its annual Beach Clean Up on Saturday, July 19. 9:00 - 11:00 AM

Meet at the park at the end of Lippett Avenue by 9:00 am.

Here's some information from Stephany Hessler, Save The Bay's Volunteer & Internship Manager:

"Looks like it will be VERY hot for this event.  So please dress cool, bring a hat, your sun block, and a cold water bottle. We'll work as long as we can in that 2 hour window.  If it's extremely and dangerously hot, we'll shorten the time.  I will have latex free  gloves, but if you want yard gloves, please bring your own."

"Please know that this cleanup is being sponsored by the Riverview Neighborhood Association.  This park and the area we are cleaning up is part of their community.  Please be respectful of the site, the people, and the streets you park on.  They host this cleanup with us annually and always allow us to bring in outside volunteers to participate.  Let's be sure to let them know we appreciate that gesture!"

"Attached, please find a Volunteer Release Form (click for PDF version).  You must bring this form with you, filled out, in order to participate.  If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the form for you."

"See you Saturday!  Stephany"

Association Concerns/Questions and Responses:

What is the purpose of the digging on Lippitt?

Archeological study for the sewers

Didn’t we already do the study and who pays for it?

It is federally funded and the City is in the 2nd of 3 phases. Phase 1 included a paper trail with research, in which they found areas with remains. The machine is gently digging, and so far, they did found the remains of a young Narragansett tribe person and a camp site. If they find anything in this phase, they will move to the third phase so a full archeological dig can be done. Depending on what is found then, the sewer lines might have to be moved around the area.

There is a new crime trend concerning GPS thefts. It is happening on the Cranston/Warwick line. Thieves are now breaking into garages to steal these devices out of cars.
